Knock
A writing exercise to feed your creative mind
Your story begins with a person knocking on the door.
What do they look like?
Where have they arrived?
What has their journey been like to get here?
Is their arrival intentional e.g. were they looking for this specific house to tell the residents something important or was there some kind of accident and they are looking for a place to stay?
Are the people who answer the door happy to see them?
What happens next?
Please share your writing in the comments if you’d like!

My short story - For Sam – has been published by The Fiction Journal. It is one of the most personal pieces I’ve written. Though shaped as fiction, it carries the weight of a memory that never fully loosened its grip on me. Most of us have known a dog - or some other quiet companion - who loved us with a devotion that felt both undeserved and transformative. And many of us carry, somewhere inside, an echo of the small griefs we weren’t ready for when we were young. https://thefictionjournal.substack.com/p/for-sam
